StrengthErg

Price range: $1,350.00 through $1,500.00

The Concept2 StrengthErg applies the flywheel from the rest of the Erg range to strength training. Resistance comes from air rather than plates, which changes how a lift works: it adjusts continuously through the range of motion, so you are not limited by the movement’s weakest point, and the harder you pull or push, the more it resists, up to over 1,200 pounds of force.

It is concentric only. There is no resistance on the return, which means the eccentric phase becomes recovery rather than load. One practical consequence is that you cannot fail a rep, so you can train to the limit without a spotter or a rack.

Two versions are available. At $1,500, it comes with the PM5 performance monitor and a device holder. At $1,350, you get the device holder only and use your own phone or tablet with the free ErgData app. Either way, the calculations happen in an ErgLink hub below the flywheel, which both the monitor and the app connect to over Bluetooth.

The frame is aluminum in a black finish, 61″ long and 26″ wide with the pushbar, with the seat 21″ from the floor. Concept2 suggests allowing 80″ x 38″ to use it. The machine weighs 90 lb and rolls on caster wheels, but it stores fully assembled and cannot stand upright. Maximum user weight is 350 lb. It ships in two boxes with tools and illustrated instructions, and Concept2 offers a 30-day money-back guarantee along with a 2- or 5-year warranty.
